NBA, NFL to collaborate on Election Day awareness

The NBA and NFL are collaborating for the first time on Election Day awareness, a shared initiative that launched earlier this month with an eye on poll worker recruitment. Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue brought the leagues together, specifically visiting with current Commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, and the initial arrangement was to co-promote “Poll Worker Recruitment Day’’ on Aug. 1. The NFL had previously worked with the group “Vet the Vote,’’ while the NBA has teamed with the entity “Power the Polls,’’ and the two leagues connected both organizations to amplify their ongoing get-out-and-vote message.

“We all just felt it would be an opportunity around the ‘Poll Worker Recruitment Day’ to demonstrate how all these organizations could come together to support, ultimately, the foundation of democracy, which is participation either as a poll worker or certainly voting,’’ said Kathy Behrens, the NBA’s president of social responsibility & player programs. “That's a big priority for us. And I don’t want to speak for them, but it seems a big priority for the NFL.’’
