Michigan Department of State teams up with Vet the Vote at NASCAR race to promote voting, encourage veterans to become poll workers

BROOKLYN, Mich. – On Sunday, Aug. 18, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson visited Michigan International Speedway along with Vet the Vote to promote voting and encourage veterans to sign up to be poll workers. The Secretary of State mobile office was on site at the Fan Plaza before each day’s race registering NASCAR fans to vote.

The Michigan Department of State (MDOS) has teamed up with Vet the Vote, a nonpartisan national campaign to recruit veterans and military families to become poll workers, connect with veterans, dismantle misinformation, and increase confidence in our state’s safe and secure election process.

“Veterans fought for our freedom, answering the call to serve, and we salute their service,” said Secretary Benson. “We’re proud to partner with Vet the Vote to recruit more veterans and their families to serve as poll workers, playing an essential role in our elections and democratic process. Veterans increase our confidence in our elections, and it’s our goal is to have a veteran in every Michigan polling place this election year.”

“We loved being with NASCAR fans and fellow military spouse Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, at Michigan International Speedway,” said Ellen Gustafson, Executive Director of We the Veterans and Military Families. “Vet the Vote was there to welcome NASCAR to our coalition of organizations recruiting veterans and military family members to be poll workers in Michigan and around the country. For the 2024 elections, Vet the Vote has recruited over 140,000 veterans and military family members nationally to serve again in their local jurisdictions - including 2,874 across the State of Michigan."

This year, Michigan clerks need election workers for the nine-day early voting period starting on Saturday, Oct. 27, and Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Visit Michigan.gov/DemocracyMVP to sign up to become a poll worker.
